Tricks Of The Trade
In this chapter we delve into different deceptive techniques and strategies that you can employ on your opponent. Each fighter learns these techniques and adapts them to his or her own style making them unique.
1 “Catch mine, come with yours’ ‘Which is a counter attack technique using the jab. Its a simple move to score points and frustrate your opponent taking his single jab attack away from him.
When your opponent shoots a single jab, (assuming you’re in the orthodox stance) you simply parry it with your right hand, and then immediately shoot your counter jab. The goal is to shoot your jab, scoring on your opponent before his jab comes back, catching him in the opening. Easy and very effective if executed right.
2 Deceptive jab to the body, then to the head: This move is deceptive in nature and easy to execute.
First, jab the body. When jabbing to the body, make sure you are low and elusive and looking at your opponent’s body. Next jab again getting low and elusive looking at your opponents body but this time you are jabbing to the head. To sell this deceptive move, you’re using your eyes and getting low and elusive as if you were jabbing to the body.
3”Feint the jab” This deceptive move is basic. The goal is to either freeze your opponents reaction time or get your opponents hands out of position.
Make a false jab then shoot the real jab behind. When feinting, make sure to put both moves (the feint and the real jab) almost into one movement. The window of opportunity will be around a half of a second so timing will be crucial.
4”Throwaway Jab” This is a deceptive move to set up the big right hand using the 1-2 combination.
*Feinting the jab, then bringing the big right hand behind. This move you can use the straight right hand, big overhand right, or the right hook (from the orthodox stance). Again the timing will be crucial and will need to put both movements together to almost one movement.
There variations to the “Throwaways” but all executed in the same manner setting up the other hand.
*Throwaway Hook
*Throwaway Right Hand
*Throwaway Uppercut
5”Elusive head in the lane” When fighting an opponent when he or she is in the orthodox stance, “Head In the lane” refers to having your head in the right side where you are more accessible to your opponent’s right hand (assuming your opponent is in the orthodox stance).
“In the lane” is a dangerous area but you can use this to lure your opponent to throw his right hand. Once you have achieved this, you can use creative ways to counter punch your opponent. For example, you put your head in the lane. Your opponent throws his right hand. While anticipating, you slip to the left and at the same time, throw your right hand to the body while his arm is still extended.
There are many creative ways to counter punch when using the “Elusive head in the lane”
