Power from the hip

“Generating power from the hip”

Generating power from the hip is a key technique in boxing. By turning the hip on power shots such as hooks, crosses, and uppercuts, you can generate ADDED power and increase the impact of your strikes.

When you throw a power punch, the power comes from the rotation of the body, which starts with the feet and moves up through the legs, hips, stomach core, and lastly the arm. By turning your hip into the punch, you are adding the power of your hip rotation to the punch, which can SIGNIFICANTLY increase the force of the strike.

To execute this technique properly, start with a traditional boxing stance with your feet shoulder width apart and your hands up to protect with your feet planted firmly on the ground. As you do this, turning your hip will cause your torso to rotate. Finally, extend your arm and deliver the punch, using the power generated by your hip rotation.

It’s important to note that this technique requires proper form, technique and repetition to be effective. If you don’t rotate your hip properly or if your technique or form is off, you may not generate as much power as you could or should. You could leave yourself open to counterattacks.
